Day Two -- wow!

What a great day! The creativity and thought put into your panels was astounding and made me so proud of all of you! And I've never seen students RUN back INTO a school after a fire drill before!! Mr. Stirn looked at the panels and was so impressed he'd like to work with us on an even more prominent display in the new entry! Camille will need a couple of weeks to transfer the work back to her studio, assemble the stripes and create the union -- at some point this semester we'll have a grand unveiling. Thank you all for your hard work and focus.

This blog is part of the archival requirements for the art residency grants. Continue to blog your thoughts about the process -- how was today, what did you learn through the panel creation, or even the larger issues of how the process may be an appropriate representation of our democracy. We'll add photos from the residency and also post the address on the dedication plaque, inviting comments from visitors to JM.

Also, check out how Camille continues to explore these citizenships issues on her website.

More later,

Mr. Decker

As a senior, I kind of feel like once we graduate and time goes on, we can never go back to that experiece, except for our memories. While this is, of course, inevitable, this piece of art will always link us to JM, and I'm proud to be a part of it. It represents a lot of thought and committment, from the students, the teachers, and Camille and Carla. Thank you to all who helped make this a reality.

So, Friday...Friday was great. It was just amazing knowing that it was actually happening. And then the fire drill...that really really made me mad. While we were outside I was complaining because i wanted to paint not stand outside..when usually it's the other way around. Thank you so much to everyone who made this possible. Decker thanks for helping. I can't wait to see it done and put up.

I can hardly remember another time that I was so impressively excited to go to school. I can't remember a time when my face beamed all day long. This project brought such joy into my heart, that I had no choice but to be giddy! My peers displayed such positive attitudes while working which made me feel a sense of unity. The fire alarm is a good example of what happens in the world...we get delayed, held back from our goals. Though we were frustrated out on that blacktop, we pressed on and bolted to finish our masterpieces! I truly enjoyed seeing other people's wood slabs, choosing to be a white stripe, and being a spectacle in halls! I am so thankful for this opportunity and I hope that Friday, October 27 wasn't the last time that my smiling face gets a workout!

I must agree with everyone else, Friday was pretty cool. The medium we were working with was really interesting, I've never used paints with charcoal and pencils before It was really fun from that perspective.

Friday was a lot of fun, and making the squares was easier than I expected. I too was suprised by the skill and creativity that everyone showed, and hope that this piece looks as fantastic as I think it will when it is completed!

I thought it was SO MUCH FUN. I saw soo many ideas and everything! I would so love to do this again someday. My tile had to do with lines and rectangles and squares and it was all over the place, but to me it meant unconditional love and there was ONE star and ONE star only because all the states create a country which that white star represented. To me, when the people look at MY own tile, THEY get to choose what they think the meaning is. My tile has meaning, but all kinds of meaning depending on who the person that looks at it thinks about it. My tile has more than one meaning and it depends on the person that is choosing the meaning for itself. It was a great exprience. The fire drill was reallly fun though. (3 and 4)

It was great painting and listening to the music, knowing that your making a little part of a big project. At first I didn't want to start drawing on my piece cause i wanted it to be perfect, but after that first line, it went away and i was able to draw the rest. I can't wait to see the whole flag and what it looks like. The fire drill sucked though cause we had less time to finish but it was all good. ha.
